GPS Navigation System – How It Works

Posted on 26 December 2008 by admin

The Global Positioning System (GPS) was originally developed by the US Military who launched satellites (the first satellite was launched in 1978) into orbit. The system consists of a network of between 24 and 32 satellites orbiting the earth at about 7000 mph, in a precise manner, two times every day.

In the early days only the military could track the signals but in the 1980’s it was opened up to the general public.

Before we get into the specifics it is important to realize that the use of the satellite network is free, there is no subscription required.

The other benefit is the system is essentially unaffected by weather and it is accurate anywhere in the world. Some might recall the Loran system which was popular with boaters before GPS became popular.

Loran was capable of providing a very accurate position but only in limited areas where the transmission of signals was sufficient and provided the weather was not adverse.

GPS transmission satellites orbit the earth in a very precise and constant manner. As they orbit 12,000 miles above, they transmit radio signals 24 hours a day, every day. The receivers we use simply receive the transmitted signals and compare the time the signal was transmitted against the time it was received. Knowing the signals travel at a fixed rate of speed makes it easy to calculate how far the satellite and the receiver are from each other.

If this process were done with only one satellite the result would not be useful for us since it would only indicate a possible arc of a position. To provide accuracy the receiver has to receive signals from a minimum of 3 satellites.

In actual use, the receivers typically track the signals from many more satellites.
In order to provide data like speed, direction, distance traveled, etc. the receiver repeats the position calculation on a continual basis and thus updates the position and other data. The signal transmitted includes the satellites ID, the satellites position at any given time and the date and time.

Accuracy of the receivers has improved with technology advances to an average of about 15 meters. In real practice it is common to see accuracy within a meter or two, at least at times.

When GPS was opened up for public use the signal was intentionally degraded by the Government which was referred to as Selective Availability (SA). SA has been discontinued so civilians now enjoy full accuracy of the system.

Technology referred to as Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) available with some receivers improves accuracy to about 5 meters. Receivers equipped with Differential technology apply corrections to the data based on other known references.

The end result is accuracy and functionality of GPS receivers to the point we all can rely upon. As a result we now see and enjoy GPS watches, auto and boat GPS navigation systems, GPS cell phones.

Pointless Gadgets; Don’t We Just Love Them?

Posted on 26 December 2008 by admin

Ah gadgets, I love them, take something that can be done in a number of ways, find the most pointless way of doing it and there you have the making of a good gadget. Why for example would you want to open a bottle of wine with a bottle opener that will cost you 2 pounds when you can also do it with one that costs 50 times as much, or maybe one that’s built into your sandal or belt buckle.

But gadgets aren’t just about helping you get your bottle of wine open. They come in all shapes and sizes and some would say that the term covers the entire consumer electronics field. I am a gadget lover, ie to love all things gadgety.

Here are some of my more favourite pointless gadgets at the moment.

Glow Tap.

This little gizmo fits onto taps and has an internal switch that lights up a set of LEDs when you turn on your tap transforming the stream of water into a waterfall of light. Rather than just as aesthetic effect, there’s a temperature sensor within the unit that can tell whether the water is cold or hot, and changes the colour of the light accordingly. Complete with a set of universal adaptors for most size taps, the glow flow tap is available now for 14.99.

Moixa USBCELL batteries.

The USBCELL as an environmentally-friendly alternative to normal AA batteries. The top of one side flips up to reveal a USB connector, and the battery simply plugs into an open port. It takes five hours to charge one of the cells if it was fully discharged; each battery has a capacity of 1300mAH. The USBCELL cost around 12.99 for two AA batteries.

Ion iED05 USB drum kit.

Aimed at both beginners and experienced drummers, the Ion iED05 drum kit is a digital set-up that connects to your PC via USB. All you have to do is simply connect the adjustable drum kit to your USB port and you will have access to over 200 drum sounds that will work with the velocity-sensitive drum pads and cymbals, which react accurately to every hit. The kit even includes video tutorial software and a drumming game to allow you to play along to music to improve your performance. The Ion iED05 costs 129.99.

Pleo.

Pleo is the Robotic Camarasaurus Dinosaur from the co-creator of the Furby. The one-week old infant Camarasaurus from the late Jurassic period created by UGOBE (You Go Be) is an autonomous Life Form that advances through life stages and develops a unique personality through user interaction. Like Sony’s Aibo, if you treat him well and he’ll become friendly and outgoing, treat him badly and he’ll become timid or angry. Initially cautious, Pleo will walk around slowly to absorb his surroundings but may cry when frightened or scared. He will stretch when waking up and he may even stomp his foot if he gets angry. Man’s best friend had better watch out.

Star Trek “Communicator”.

Flip up the grill, and you’ll be greeted with the lights and sounds Star Trek fans have come to know and love. As an added bonus, this replica is complete with voice clips from the actual series pre-loaded. Oh, what japes you’ll have listening to Spock ask you if you want an armed party beamed down, and just think of the thrills as you call the Enterprise and hear: “Bridge here, Captain”!

Pointless gadgets are always worth a laugh, whether impressing your mates down the pub or just for your own pleasure.

Technology; Now Helping Us To Stay Fit And Healthy

Posted on 26 December 2008 by admin

Sports might be about getting fit, but that doesn’t mean it’s not without its gadgets. Whether you’re running, cycling, snowboarding or swimming, gadgets can help you get the most out of training. Here are a couple of great gadgets that will maximise your training, helping you on the road to victory.

Nike+ SportBand.

The Nike+ SportBand allows runners to get real-time performance feedback during a run giving them information on their distance, pace, time and calories burned, in addition to gaining access to all of the features and tools on the nikeplus website.

The Nike+ SportBand watch face is a detachable link that captures all the run data from a sensor located in the runner’s Nike+ ready footwear and once a run is completed, the link plugs into a computer like a USB drive, so data can be tracked. The system also offers Nike+ Coach so beginners and intermediate runners can access existing programmes to train for a 5k, 10k, half-marathon or full marathon.

Orange e-diet.

Launching later in the year, the Orange e-diet is a text service in the UK that will allow you to monitor calories in the food you eat on the go. Users wanting to monitor what they eat will be able to text orange and get the calorie count back giving them the information of whether its good or bad for them before they buy.

Samsung miCoach fitness mobile phone.

We’ve had camera-focused phones, we’ve had music-focused phones, and now Samsung is to launch a fitness-focused phone. Called the miCoach (F110), the quad-band slider handset will offer a dedicated fitness button that once connected to a heart rate monitor and a step counter will give you information about your heart beat, distance covered and time running when out on a run.

But rather than just record your information to download to a computer later, the phone, through the headphones, will give you running information on the fly by simply tapping the screen. Measuring your heartbeat, the phone will also tell you if you are running too fast or too slow, based on the fitness programme you have selected. The miCoach will offer over 220 training programmes via a fitness website ranging from plans focused towards you loosing weight or running a marathon and measure your running speed within four zones to best suit your training based on an initial assessment run.

Wii Fit.

The computer game from Nintendo means you can play computer games and get fit at the same time. The Wii Fit comes bundled with the Wii Balance Board. It senses weight and shift in balance in any direction and therefore by standing on the Wii Balance Board during activities allows players to follow along to movements ensuring they have full control of the on-screen activities.

There are four training categories including Aerobic Exercises, Muscle Workouts, Yoga and Balance Games that Nintendo claim will help you (and your friends/family) to develop bodily balance control ability, burn fat in the body, help tone and condition muscles, as well as help increase aerobic stamina. Within those categories there are over 40 different activities such as Hula Hoop, Ski Jump, Press-up Challenge, Rhythm Boxing, Rowing Squat, Lunge and classic Yoga poses such as Half Moon, Tree and Crocodile Twist.

H20 Audio headphones.

The H20 Audio headphones aren’t any old headphones, but waterproof headphones that let you listen to your iPod to a depth of up to 10ft, or 3m, thanks to waterproof housing and waterproof speakers. Robust enough for ‘active watersports’ thanks to a behind-the-neck design, silicone earplugs, and a durable neckwrap to keep them in place they cost around 26.99 and means you’ll be singing underwater as you do length after length.

In the past technology has been accused of making us lazier. Clearly with the development of technologies such as these the move is towards using equipment to improve our fitness.

Technology expert Thomas Pretty looks into how sports fitness news programs are increasingly reporting devices that work towards improving the user’s health and wellbeing.

What’s In A Gadget Review For A Woman

Posted on 26 December 2008 by admin

There are two different sorts of men. There are your basic manly men who move from being twelve to fifty in one swift move and don’t see the bit in between. You marry the man with the designer stubble and promising career and the next thing you know you have a middle aged balding man with a paunch and a constantly serious scowl on his face. And this is for one reason only.

You married the wrong man. You should have married the other type. The one who knows exactly how to nurture his inner child. Yes, women who have been through the marriage process once will know that a lumbering great man that stopped developing his maturity at twelve can be difficult, they need constant reminders to put down the toilet seat, to put the top on the toothpaste and to pick up their laundry but they are infinitely more fun than the boring one with the paunch.

So, in my humble opinion, let that twelve year old out for at least one day a week and the whole man will be much more productive in the long wrong. But how to do this? My tip is to let him indulge the child in him – this child will want to play with toys and gadgets, it will want to take things apart, build them back up and probably want to tell you all about it too. This is the point where it is fully acceptable to have your iPod in place and not at regular moments while looking interested but glazed – don’t worry, he won’t notice.

Just how are you expected to know what toys to provide? Well, pick up a lads mag (not that sort) and check out the gadget reviews. You will find a whole selection in a variety of price ranges and you will also get a good idea from the gadget review what type depending on the mood.

The mood is something that you will learn to not only assess over time, but use to your advantage. Read the gadget reviews and start him off with something simple. If he’s taken to dismantling things around the house from boredom, check out the gadget review for construction toys . When playtime is over, you stand a pretty good chance of getting that toaster fixed or those shelves up as he will be all buoyed up from his sense of achievement and you will get the jobs around the house done without having to nag.

If he’s in a stressy mood, read the gadget reviews to find something that he can take his frustration out on. Remote control cars are pretty good for this. They cater to the lazy teenager inside him but also allow him to vent his pent up frustration in a little road rage session without any criminal damages cases against him.

For the laid back man that needs a bit of oomph, find him a toy that is simple. Electronic gadgets are great for this, he can lay back on the sofa all afternoon and get nothing more than repetitive strain injury on his fingers from programming a fiddly new phone, music player or the like.

Of course, there will be many a weekend when you need him out from under your feet while you get on with stuff round the house. For this, I recommend a go-go gadget type of present. Something like a jet powered back pack to bring out the daredevil James Bond that he knows is in there.

Relationship expert Catherine Harvey looks at the reasons women should use gadget reviews to get the best from her man.

PSP Movie Downloads – Fill Your PSP, But Be Careful

Posted on 26 December 2008 by admin

With multimedia technologies incorporated into the Sony hand held – this gaming console marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment – playing movies in it is now becoming easier and convenient. With many websites providing PSP movie downloads, PSP users need not waste time any more searching for their favorite movies in movie stores and rental shops.

With the growing popularity of broadband internet connections, internet users worldwide are having enough bandwidth which allows them to download huge amounts of data within a limited time. The same is applicable in the case of PSP movie downloads. Most users are able to download high quality PSP movies at faster speeds than ever before.

Websites which are providing PSP movie downloads fall mainly into three categories. Some websites charge for movie downloads in which the users have to pay for each movie they are downloading. The second category websites require the user to make a single one-time payment, after which the users are allowed unlimited downloads. Once registered with these websites, users are provided full access to their databases and they can search and download movies instantly. The third category of websites which are providing PSP movie downloads offers free download services.

With advancements in internet technology, most PSP movie download websites guarantee higher download speeds even at slower connections such as the regular 56k internet connection. Movies can be downloaded directly to your computers and using a USB cable, these movies can be copied to your PSP. If you find that the movie you have downloaded is not optimal to the PSPs wide 480×270 screen, using a PSP movie converter will help you encode movies to the natural screen resolution of the PSP.

Although there are a number of websites providing PSP movie downloads, it is better to make sure that the website from which you are downloading movies is providing movies in the MP4 format. MP4 format is the video format supported by PSP. If you are downloading PSP movies in formats other than MP4, you can use freeware converters which can convert movies in other popular formats to MP4 format.

With these popular PSP movie downloads, users can find that their favorite gaming console can also function as a smart video playback system with support to the popular wide-screen format used in movies. For better playback of downloaded movies, it is recommended to update your handheld with the latest firmware and software.

Bathroom Remodel Tips: Bathroom Vanity Material Types

Posted on 26 December 2008 by admin

One of the most common questions we receive from our clients is:
What material are your vanities made from?

Though the answer is a simple one, the response we get from clients can be at times frustrating. There are many myths about bathroom cabinetry material type. The goal of this article is to help educate you on this subject and provide clarification.

Bathroom vanity cabinets can be manufactured from many materials including solid hardwood, MDF (medium density fiberboard), laminate, and glass, just to name a few.

Here are a few advantages and disadvantages to each:

Solid Hardwood
You will pay a much higher price for a vanity made from solid hardwood. Solid hardwood needs to be laminated together matching grain and color. It must also be adequately dried to prevent warping. There is a higher waste factor in the manufacturing process. You can easily determine if a vanity is made from solid hardwood by looking at the interior finish; if the inside of the vanity has a stain finish, it is made from solid wood; if it is painted, it is made from MDF.

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)
MDF is a composite wood product made out of wood waste fibers glued together with resin, heat, and pressure. MDF is used in many applications because it is smooth, uniform, and won’t warp with a quality paint or finish. MDF is appropriate for bathroom cabinetry because it is more stable with changing humidity levels (no swelling or shrinking). MDF has gained popularity because it has a lower impact on the environment as compared to lumber because it is made from leftover scraps that would otherwise be dumped into a landfill.

Laminate
Laminate comes in a wide variety of colors and textures: wood patterns, stone, marble and solid colors. Laminate is often used in commercial jobs because of its durability and ease of care. It is also used in post modern remodels and children’s rooms.

Glass
This very simple to care for; usually considered a contemporary look with limited cabinet space. Most glass vanities have open shelves for storage which require a focus on organization as it is visible to all. Glass vanities can be expensive, depending one the size of the vanity. Glass vanities are usually mixed with chrome for a clean line sophisticated look.

All of the materials mentioned above are considered acceptable materials to manufacture bathroom vanities. The more important factor is the quality of the manufacturer. I have personally seen solid hardwood vanity lines that are manufactured poorly, and have seen very high quality MDF bathroom vanities. Do your research when choosing a vanity retailer, and ideally ask others for recommendations when possible.

Recycling Your Old Cell Phones

Posted on 26 December 2008 by admin

In several months or years, you’ll rediscover them. By then, the phones will seem worthless to you, so you’ll probably discard them and subsequently, the phones will end up in the local landfill.

How do you recycle cell phones?

Passing your old phones on to family or friends is the simplest method of recycling. The majority of the phones we discard for an updated model or after switching service providers remain completely usable and functional. If you give it to a friend or family member, you’ll be sure that the phone will have an additional year or two of use. However, this merely stretches out the phone’s life cycle. You can help the environment by telling the person receiving the phone to recycle it properly when the time comes.

You can actually return your old cell phones to the manufacturer for recycling. The leading US service providers and manufacturers such as Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint have cell phone take-back programs with free shipping and/or discounts in subsequent purchases. They’ll ensure that the phones are refurbished or recycled in an environmentally safe manner. The companies receive a steady flow of recycled materials for producing new things while you ensure that your old phones are recycled safely and you receive discounts as well.

Donate your phones to your favorite charity or non-profit organization. A lot of these groups collect old cell phones and sell them to recyclers and refurbishers to raise funds. You can work with other non-profit organizations and even request material assistance from recycling companies if you wish to initiate a similar project in your area. Even children are getting involved with these projects. Zoos often place cell phone collection boxes near the entrance. Raising funds for a noble cause will put good use to something that would have been useless or even harmful if discarded inappropriately.

Recycle cell phones through refurbishing and recycling companies. Selling your old or used phones to businesses is quick and easy. Everything can be done on the internet in several minutes. Just visit the company’s website, check the actual buying price of your phone, and request a shipping label. After receiving the pre-paid labels, package your phones and mail them to the company. The company usually sends you the check within 4 business days of receiving your package.

There’s plenty of opportunity to improve our efforts to recycle cell phones. As more consumers learn the importance of recycling cell phones, we will be able to increase the recycling rate across the nation.
